Synchro Poznan Cup 2010

This weekend the Synchro Poznan Cup 2010 was held in Poznań (POL) and it was a pleasure for me to join the staff of Judges that met there. It is always an interesting Event for Juniors and Seniors, different levels and several countries take part (as for this year Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Poland as the host). This is the first event I join this year and I hope I will be able to report many other synchro events this year :)

Este fin de semana se celebro la Copa Synchro Poznan 2010 en Poznań (POL) y fue un placer para mi unirme a los otros Jueces que se dieron cita a este Evento. Este evento siempre ha sido interesante, un Evento para atletas Junior y Mayores, diferentes niveles y varios paises que siempre asisten a la cita (este ano estuvieron Bielorusia, Bulgaria, Hungria, Rusia, la Republica Checa y Polonia como el pais anfitrion). Este es el primer evento que califico este ano y espero poder calificar muchos otros Eventos mas y compartirlo por esta via :)

If you don't pay attention to what is happenning on the pool while you are juding, you can be a victim of a candid camera and be caught looking somewhere else :) good I passed the test (once again) and I was looking at what I was meant to hehehe

Si no estas prestando atencion a lo que esta ocurriendo en la piscina cuando estas calificando, puedes ser victima de una camara escondida y ser agarrado mirando para otro lado :) que bueno que pase esta prueba (una vez mas) y yo estaba mirando a donde debia mirar jejeje

Judges FINA School - Prague 2010

Finished only a couple of days ago - with big success - the FINA School for Synchronized Swimming Judges 2010 took place in Prague and 50 Judges (including myself) met there. Actually it was the first School out of the ones to be held this year. Following will be the School in Miami and later there will be Schools in every continent until May 2010. Four days of intensive learning and knowledge share, very interesting and specially now, when we will begin judging using a more detailed method, that will be very useful for all the coaches (as a direct feedback) but requires a lot of work from our side (Judges) to assure we are providing the right message with the right reasons. At the end of the School, we all took the exam and we are all waiting for the results to be published, thus we could be elegible for FINA events. I wish good luck to all the Judges going to the School :)

Recien terminada hace un par de dias - con gran exito - la Escuela FINA para Jueces de Nado Sincronizado 2010 se llevo a cabo en Praga y 50 Jueces (incluyendo a mi mismo) nos encontramos alla. Esta es la primera Escuela de todas las ediciones que habra este ano; la siguiente Escuela sera esta semana en Miami y luego habra una Escuela en cada continente hasta Mayo 2010. Cuatro dias de aprendizaje intensivo y de compartir conocimientos, un evento muy interesante, espeicalmente ahora cuando estamos preparandonos para calificar utilizado un metodo mucho mas detallado, que sera muy util para los Entrenadores (por la retroalimentacion compleja) pero igual requerira de nuestra parte (los jueces) mucho trabajo para asegurar que estamos entregando el mensaje correcto basado en las razones correctas. Al final de la escuela, todos tomamos el examen y ahora estamos esperando por los resultados a ser publicados, para asi poder ser elegibles para eventos FINA. Mucha suerte para todos los Jueces :)

Within 2 weeks, the 4th Synchronized Swimming FINA World Trophy will be held in Montreal, bringing in new Events and making the sport even more interesting and more atractive for the audience. This year, 5 Events will be held:

Synchro Highlight routine (platform lift, floating pattern, cadence action, throw),
Thematic duet (reflecting the culture of the host country),
Solo,
Thematic team (reflecting the culture of the Team's own country),
Combination,

In each event the judges will only score the artistic impression. Participating countries are: Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, United Kingdom and USA. Stay tunned and enjoy!

Dentro de 2 semanas, el 4to Trofeo Mundial FINA de Nado Sincronizado se realizara en Montreal, poniendo en escen anuevos eventos, haciendo este deporte aun mas interesante y atractivo para la audiencia. Este ano, 4 eventos estaran en competencia:

Rutina de puntos culminantes (plataforma, flota, accion en cadena y lanzamiento),
Dueto tematico (que refleje la cultura del pais anfitrion),

Roma 2009 (about to begin)

Within a few days, the 13th FINA World Swimming Championship will begin and its host city will be Rome, exactly as it happned 15 years ago. With no much time left, at this stage everybody is finishing the last details on the preparation but also probably already packing and getting on their way (because "all the ways lead to Rome"). 15 years ago, special swimming pools were builded for Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo by Myrtha Pools; this time these 2 sports will also share the same venue and you can read more about it here.Dentro de unos dias, el 13vo Campeonato Mundial FINA de Natacion comenzara y la ciudad sede es Roma, igual como sucedio hace 15 anos. Faltando tan poco tiempo, en este momento todo el mundo estara alistando los ultimos detalles en su preparacio ademas de estar (tal vez) ya comenzando a empacar y a tomar su camino (porque "todos los caminos llevan a Roma"). Hace 15 anos, una piscina especial fue creada por Myrtha Pools para las competencias de Nado Sincronizado y Polo Acuatico; este ano estos dos deportes tambien compartiran la misma piscina y pueden leer mas acerca de esto aqui.

15 years ago, the VII FINA World Swimming Championship was held in Rome and it is a gift to be able to have a look - again - to those performances and routines; now on days, we have new faces, new countries, new tendencies but still it is really interesting seeing how this sport has grown and evolutioned. Hard to say which surprises the FINA World Swimming Championship Roma 09 will bring us... but for sure we are all waiting for it :)

Hace 15 anos, el 7mo Campeonato Mundial de Natacion de la FINA se realizo en Roma y es una suerte el poder ver - de nuevo - las ejecuciones y las rutinas que se nadaron entonces; hoy en dia tenemos nuevas caras, nuevos paises, nuevos estilos pero es muy interesante ver como este deporte ha crecido y evolucionado. Es dificil de predecir que sorpresas nos traera el proximo Campeonato Mundial de Natacion de la FINA Roma 2009... pero seguro que todos estamos esperando :)

Danube Cup 2009

Last weekend, I was in Vienna (AUT) Judging at the Danube Cup 2009, it was my first time judging at this Event and it was quiet interesting, there were all the Events resumed in only 2 days of competition. The Clubs and National Teams participating were from the Czech Republic, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland and the host: Austria. I am very glad I could assist and see all these people getting ready for the World Championship that will take place later this year in Rome. Next year, Danube Cup is meant to be held in Slovakia... so stay tunned! :)

El fin de semana pasado, estuve en Viena (Austria) calificando en la Copa Danubio 2009, esta fue la primera vez que califique en este EVento y me parecio bastante interesante, tuvimos solo dos dias de competencia y calificamos todos los eventos. Los Clubes y Equipos participando fueron de Eslovaquia, Republica Checa, Rusia, Serbia, Suiza y el anfitrion: Austria. Fue para mi un placer haber participado y una fortuna poder ver todos estos paises preparandose para el Mundial de Natacion que sera dentro de unos meses en Roma. El proximo ano, la Copa Danubio va a realizarse en Eslovaquia... alla nos veremos tambien! :)

Men's Cup 2009

The 3rd Men's Cup of Synchronized Swimming was held by April 11th in Milan (ITA) and there was participation of several countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and Ukraine) and they competition had participation in Solo, Duet, Trio, Team and Combo. Synchronized Swimming remains as a women sport on the mind of many people in the world, what can be surprising for a lot of people is the amount of men that are practicing this sport and the commitment they have with what they do that even they organize their own competition :) it is probably a small step today but it is worth to believe that it will be a huge step for the future of this sport.

La 3ra Copa de Nado Sincronizado para Hombres se llevo a cabo el 11 de Abril en Milan (ITA) y hubo participacion de varios paises (Alemania, Belgica, Espana, Francia, Japon, Italia, los Paises Bajos, Republica Checa, Suecia y Ucrania) compitiendo en Solo, Dueto, Trio, Equipo y Combo. El Nado Sincronizado, para muchas personas, se asocia solamete con la idea de que es un deporte para mujeres; lo que puede resultar una sorpresa para muchos, es la cantidad de hombres que practican este deporte y el nivel de compromiso que tienen con lo que hacen y disfrutan que hasta organizan sus propias competencias :) tal vez este es un pequeno paso que dan hoy pero vale la pena creer, que este paso significara un gran avance para este deporte en el futuro.

German Open 2009

This year I had the opportunity - for the first time - to Judge at the German Open, an Event that became one of the most important Synchronized Swimming Competitions during the first part of every year; with over 20 Clubs / Teams participating and an amount of routines similar to a World Cup, this Event is a great opportunity to see some of the best participants in the world getting into the water. Having the World Championship this year, later in July, the German Open was the perfect opportunity to show what they have achieved so far and understand what should be improved during the following months. Great routines... outstanding ovations... a very interesting Event that I hope I can attend every year from now on.

Este ano tuve la oportunidad - por primera vez - de participar y calificar en el Abierto de Alemania, un evento que se ha convertido en uno de los Eventos de Nado Sincronizado mas importantes de la primera parte de cada ano; con 20 Clubes / Paises participantes y una cantidad de rutinas similar a un Campeonato Mundial, este Evento es una gran oportunidad para ver algunas de las mejores ejecuciones del mundo en el agua. Teniendo el Campeonato Mundial de Natacion este ano, en Julio, el Abierto de Alemania fue la oportunidad perfecta para mostrar lo que han logrado hasta ahora y entender que se puede mejorar durante los proximos meses. Men's Cup 2009

By April 11th, in Milan the 3rd Synchronized Swimming Men's Cup will be held. Did you know this Event existed? well, not really many people knows there are men doing Synchronized Swimming... even less people knows about this Event... but yeah, there is and it is (of course) something new for this Sport, no matter whether people like it or not. Indeed, there have been only a few guys doing competitive Synchronized Swimming but this Event is really for competitors to enjoy and have fun while doing what they like to do :) Good luck!!!

El 11 de Abril, en Milan se celebrara la 3ra Copa de Nado Sincronizado para hombres, Men's Cup. Sabian que este Evento existia? bueno, ciertamente no mucha gente sabe que hay hombres haciendo Nado Sincronizado en el mundo... pues la posibilidad de que la gente conozca sobre este Evento es aun menor... pero si, existe y es (obviamente) algo - digamos que - nuevo para este Deporte, sin prestarle mucho atencion a lo que la gente piense sobre el Evento en si. La verdad es que ha habido muy pocos muchachos haciendo Nado Sincronizado a nivel competitivo en el mundo pero este Evento esta hecho para que los participantes disfruten y se diviertan mientras estan haciendo lo que les gusta hacer :) Buena suerte!!!

Gemma Mengual

One of the names that has made history on this sport is Gemma Mengual, the best synchro swimmers from Spain ever has received a special award by the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, the “Extraordinary Medal for Merit in Sport” thanks to all the achievements she acomplished during the year 2008. No other synchro swimmer has drawn such historic line of success and I am very glad to have been able to see her swimming and as a Judge, to be part of the history that she has written with her dedication and spirit. I am sure that her image will be a role model to copy by many young swimmers to come :)

Uno de los nombres que ha hecho historia en este deporte es Gemma Mengual, la mejor nadadora sincronizada de Espana de todos los tiempos; Gemma recibio una medalla especial de parte de la Real Federacion de Natacion Espanola, la "medalla extraordinaria por meritos deportivos" gracias a todos los exitos conseguidos en el ano 2008. No hay ninguna otra atleta que haya dibujado una linea en la historia como lo ha hecho Gemma hasta ahora y yo estoy muy contento de haber tenido la oportunidad de verla nadar y como Juez, de haberla calificado y de alguna forma ser parte de la historia que ella ha escrito con su dedicacion y su espiritu. Yo estoy seguro que ella sera ejemplo y un modelo a copiar por muchas atletas jovenes de futuras generaciones :)

Synchronized Swimming Pool

Surfing on the web I found the web-site of the Japanese Institute of Sport Sciences and among its Research and Training Facilities, I found the Synchronized Swimming Pool, which features a 30 X 25 mt pool, depth 2,5 - 4 mt, needless to say it has all the equipments that you could imagine (underwater speakers, microphones, video cameras) and an underwater landscape that makes it an amazing place to keep developing this sport :) great job!

Revisando paginas en INTERNET, encontre la pagina web del Instituto Japones de Ciencias Deportivas y entre las instalaciones que tienen para Investigacion y Entrenamiento, encontre la piscina de Nado Sincronizado, que mide 30X25 mt con una profundidad que va desde 2,5 hasta 4 mt; supongo que no hay que aclarar que estas instalaciones cuentan con todo lo que uno se pueda imaginar (cornetas subacuaticas, microfonos, video camaras) y una vista panoramica subacuatica que hacen de este, un lugar unico para seguir desarrollando este deporte :) magnifico trabajo!

Christmas Prize 2008

This weekend I went to Prague (CZE) to Judge at the Christmas Prize, an event that brings more and more swimmers every year and I am very glad I have the opportunity to join them. Honestly, I was amazed by the numbers:

210 swimmers (13-15 age group)
53 swimmers (Senior)
32 Clubs
52 Judges
16 Countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Croacia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic as the host country and myself from Venezuela)

It has been a very nice experience for me and I am willing to Judge at different events also near by; being a Judge is a long learning process that might never end but most definitely, all of us who have decided to become a Judge, are up to go all the way :) and yes, after having a small walk around the town, you could definitely feel that it was Christmas there!

Este fin de semana fui a Praga (CZE) para participar como Juez en el Christmas Prize, un evento de categorias que cada ano atrae a mas y mas participantes y yo estoy, ciertamente, muy contento de haber tenido la oportunidad de participar este ano. Honestamente, me quede sorprendido con los numeros:

52 Jueces

Ha sido una experiencia muy grata para mi y estoy dispuesto a seguir viajando para participar como Juez en otros eventos en paises cercanos; ser Juez es un proceso de aprendizaje muy largo que probablemente no tenga final pero definitivamente, todos los que hemos tomado la decision de ser Jueces, estamos dispuestos a recorrer ese camino :) y si, luego de dar una vuelta por la ciudad, se podia sentir que ya es Navidad!

The Regional Clinic in Synchronized Swimming was just inaugurated in Aruba. A total of 51 participants (athletes and coaches), from the Netherlands Antilles, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Aruba, are taking part in a program that is both interesting and filled with a variety of activities.Instructors Luca del Mastro from Venezuela and Lisa Petroziello-Krenzi from Canada were able to share their knowledge and experience with the participants.

La Clinica Regional de Nado Sincronizado fue recientemente inagurada en Aruba. Un total de 51 participantes (atletas y entrenadores), de las Antillas Holandesas, la Republica Dominicana, Venezuela y Aruba, estan tomando parte en el programa que es no solo interesante sino que esta lleno de diversas actividades. Los instructores son Luca del Mastro (VEN) y Lisa Petroziello-Krenzi (CAN) tendran la oportuinidad de compartir sus conocimientos y experiencias con los participantes.

The 3rd FINA Synchronized Swimming World Trophy will be held in Madrid (ESP) December 05-07 at the "Centro de Natacion M-86" and the competition events are Duets, Teams and Free Combinations, while Judges will only award Artistic Impression marks, which has brought - during the last 2 editions - some results that differ from results that are seen when both aspects (Technical + Artistic) are considered. Beginning this year, a new event will take place, Thematic Duets, that are to be a reflect of the culture of the Host Country, allowing the use of accesories in costuming to make it even more atractive to the audience and TV; that's very promissing. The countries listed to participate are: Canada, China, Egypt, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Rusia and the host: Spain.

El 3er Trofeo FINA de Nado Sincronizado se disputara este ano en Madrid (ESP) del 5 al 7 de Diciembre en el Centro de Natacion M-86 y habra competencia de Duetos, Equipos y Combos, mientras que los Jueces solo evaluaran Impresion Artistica, lo que ha traido - durante las 2 ultimas ediciones - algunos resultados cambiados y diferentes de cuando ambos aspectos (Tecnico + Artistico) son considerados. Comenzando este ano, el Trofeo de la FINA incluira un nuevo evento, Duetos Tematicos, que han de reflejar la cultura del pais anfitrion, permitiendo usar accesorios adicionales para la interpretacion de la coreografia, haciendo la competencia aun mas interesante tanto para la audiencia como para la television; este nuevo evento resulta muy prometedor. FINA Synchronized Swimming Judges School 2008 will be held once again this year, in each Continent, calling every FINA Judge (or soon to be nominated) that either did not attend last year's School or did not pass the test; so, if there are Judges that attended the School last year and did aprove the test, will not have to attend the School again until next year, when - according the plans - we will all join an International Congress, where all the new regulations will be placed in our handbooks and minds :) this year's schedule for the School looks as follows:

...accident at the Water Cube

Hiromi Kobayashi, a member of the Japanese Synchronized Swimming Team had to be helped out of the pool after she apparently fainted during Free Team finals of the Olympic Games. When the routine was over, two men in swimsuits jumped into the pool to assist the team, which was helping Kobayashi to the side. The other team members climbed out to await their scores, while the ailing woman clung to the pool's edge. Kobayashi was lifted out and she buckled to her knees. Her body and head went limp as she was carried away. Officials reported that Kobayashi hyperventilated because of stress, but that she was conscious and resting at the arena.

Hiromi Kobayashi, una de las nadadoras del Equipo de Nado Sincronizado de Japon, aparentemente se desmayo durante la Final de Equipos Libres en los Juegos Olimpicos. Cuando la rutina termino, 2 hombres saltaron a la piscina para ayudar al equipo, que estaba llevando a Hiromi al borde de la piscina. Las otras miembros del equipo estuvieron de pie recibiendo as notas, mientras esta chica era atendida en el borde de la piscina. Kobayashi fue sacada del agua y al desmayarse, fue llevada al area de asistencia. Los oficiales reportaron que Hiromi estaba hiperventilada a causa del stress, pero que esta consciente y estaba recuperandose en el area de descanzo.

301c Barracuda Twirl

During the Figure Competition at the Junior World's Championship, I was judging at the Panel 3, the Panel for the Barracuda Twirl. Although we knew that it was the panel that would finish first, we knew that we had in front a very difficult Figure to Judge, for which everything happens in just a couple of seconds. The FINA handbook describes the Figure as follows:

"From a Back Layout Position, the legs are raised to vertical as the body is submerged to a Back Pike Position with the toes just under the surface. A Thrust is executed to Vertical Position. A Twirl is executed. A Vertical Descent is executed at the same tempo as the Thrust."

The most difficult part of this figure is the Trust, followed by the Twirl (which is - numerically - almost as important as the Trust). There were some problems seen in several swimmers, probably these problems are due to different interpretations of the description of the Figure itself; to name some:

Back pike position was way too deep,
Raising the body (keeping the back pike position) even up to the level when the head breaks the surface of the water, a movement which yet didn't mean trust but raising pike position,
Trust with the legs coming up to the front of the body, breaking the design and the concept of the legs raising with the body coming under,
Very high vertical position reached after the trust but not kept during the twirl, giving the image of - sort of - 180 Spin,

These details among others, of course, I am also writing only on my behalf but these were comments shared on the Panel. Our goal should be to understand - with the same words - what is written on the rules and that understanding must be shared by Coaches, Judges and Swimmers. I hope this post can open a constructive discussion and that every Figure could be commented the same way.

En la Competencia de Figuras en el Mundial Junior, yo estaba calificando en el Panel 3, el Panel de la Figura "Barracuda con giro retorcido". Aunque sabiamos que este seria el panel que terminaria primero, igual sabiamos que teniamos una figura bastante dificil de calificar, donde todo sucede muy rapido y toda la Figura dura solo unos segundos. El manual de la FINA Describe la Figura de la forma siguiente:

"Desde la posicion acostada sobre la espalda, las piernas se elevan para alcanzar la linea vertical al mismo tiempo que el cuerpo se sumerge para asumir la posicion de escuadra cerrada sumergida con las puntas justo bajo la superficie del agua. Una estocada se ejecuta para alcanzar la posicion vertical. Un giro retorcido se ejecuta. La figura termina con un descenso en posicion vertical a la misma velocidad que la estocada."

La parte mas dificil de esta figura es la estocada, seguida por el giro retorcido (que numericamente, es casi tan importante que la estocada). Hubo problemas que vimos en varias nadadoras, probablemente estos problemas se deben a diferentes interpretaciones de la descripcion de la Figura; para nombrar algunos:

Posicion de escuadra cerrada sumergida muy pero muy sumergida,
Elevacion del cuerpo (manteniendo la posicion de escuadra cerrada) incluso hasta el nivel en que la cabeza rompe la superficie del agua, un movimiento que no es estocada sino simplemente elevacion del cuerpo en posicion de escuadra cerrada,
Una estocada llevandose las piernas hacia la cara y la parte anterior del cuerpo, rompiendo el diseno y el concepto de elevar las piernas con el cuerpo entrando en la misma linea vertical,
Gran altura en posicion vertical obtenida con la estucada pero que no se mantiene durante el giro retorcido, dando la imagen de - cierto tipo de - Tornillo de 180 grados,

Estos son solo un par de ideas entre otras, por supuesto, yo estoy escribiendo este post en mi nombre pero estos comentarios fueron compartidos por los miembros del Panel de igual forma. Nuestra meta debe ser entender - con las mismas palabras - lo que esta escrito en el reglamento y ese entendimiento tiene que ser comun entre Entrenadores, Jueces y Atletas. Yo espero que este post pueda abrir una discusion constructiva y que cada Figura pueda ser comentada de la misma forma.

Although it was a couple of weeks ago, still the experiences lived during the Junior World Championship remain and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to Judge at this event as well. The Junior World's Championship always shows new faces that soon will be part of the Senior Teams of their respective countries, the new generation of swimmers that will take the place of those that are finishing their sporting careers or that simply happen to have a better performance than older swimmers. The site, a very nice swimming pool (specially designed for synchronized Swimming) in San Petersburg held the competition where more than 200 swimmers attended the call... of course, so many swimmers meant a very long Figure Competition that lasted over 7 hours for some panels BUT I would say that this competition proved that the basic techniques and skills evaluated during the Figures, are the key points since all the ranking changed, up and down after the Figures were added to the prelimins.

Before the end of the year, only the Olympic Games will atract the attention of everyone, other Events will be held but at regional / continental level that will be also interesting to follow but will not have as many countries involved. I am glad I had the opportunity to talk about this blog during the Seminar held at the end of the competition, as I said there, this blog is open to EVERYONE and I expect to have many people willing to contribuite on making this blog, the learning / communication tool we do not have yet.

Aunque fue hace un par de semanas atras, aun las experiencias que vivimos durante el Mundial Junior permanecen en nosotros y me siento extremadamente afortunado de haber tenido la oportunidad de calificar tambien en este Evento. El Campeonato Mundial Junior siempre presenta nuevas caras que pronto perteneceran a los equipos Senior de sus respectivos paises, la nueva generacion de nadadoras que tomaran el lugar de aquellas que estan terminando su carrera deportiva o que simplemente, resulta que tecnicamente estan mejor que atletas mayores. El lugar de la competencia: una piscina increible en San Petersburgo, especialmente disenada para el Nado Sincronizado, fue el sital de competencia donde mas de 200 atletas se dieron cita... por supuesto, con esa cantidad de atletas, la competencia de Figuras fue bastante larga (duro mas de 7 horas en algunos panels) PERO me atreveria a decir que esta Competencia comprobo y confirmo una vez mas que las tecnicas y habilidades basicas que se evaluan en las figuras, son la clave de este deporte porque todo el ranking cambio, cuando las Figuras fueron sumadas a los resultados parciales de las Rutinas.

Solo quedan los Juegos Olimpicos hasta final del ano, ese sera el evento que atraera todas las miradas aunque habra otros eventos a nivel regional / continental que tambien seran interesados pero no tendran tantos paises participantes. Me da mucho gusto que tuve tambien la oportunidad de hablar sobre este blog durante el Seminario que se realizo al final de las Competencias; como lo dije ahi, este blog esta abierto para TODO EL MUNDO y espero que mucha gente este de acuerdo con la idea de contribuir en hacer este blog, una herramienta de comunicacion y aprendizaje.

Last week the Roma Synchro Cup 2008 was held and there several countries met and shared the pool in a very interesting event. Qualified and non-qualified countries showed what they are up to before the Olympic Games and moreover, before the 13th World Championship to be held next year right there, in Rome! :) so, see you there?

...at the Water Cube

Two weeks ago, the Synchronized Swimming Qualifying Event "Good Luck Beijing" toward the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 was held at the National Acuatics Center, better known as the Water Cube. An amazing geometric structure made of soap-bubble-like walls stands holding within the pools where Swimming, Diving and Synchronized Swimming will be held during this year's Olympic Games. If the pictures show something awesome... just wait until you see there yourself :) I was very lucky to have the opportunity to Judge during this event and even if it was the Qualifying Event, there were over 8000 people in the audience, that was pretty much alike to what the Olympic Games will be. I climbed up to the 50th row to make this short video, needless to say, I was tired when I got up to the last row but the view was worth it :)

Hace dos semanas, el evento Clasificatorio "Good Luck Beijing" hacia los Juegos Olimpicos Pekin 2008 se celebro en el Centro Acuattico Nacional, mejor conocido como el Cubo de Agua. Una increible estructura geometrica hecha de paredes que parecen burbujas de jabon, guarda las piscinas donde veremos las competencias de Natacion, Clavados y Nado Sincronizado durante los Juegos Olimpicos. Si en las fotos el lugar se veia asombroso... pues hay que verlo por uno mismo :) fui muy afortunado al haber tenido la oportunidad de calificar durante este Evento y aunque fue solo el pre-olimpico, habia mas de 8000 personas en el publico, eso fue bastante aprecido a lo que va a ser durante los Juegos Olimpicos. Me subi hasta la fila 50 para hacer este video, no necesito decirlo pero estaba cansado cuando llegue hasta la ultima fila pero la vista vale la pena :)

Just watching some pictures at the LEN web-site, I found a gallery with pictures from last year's Synchro Rome that was also the European Synchronized Swimming Championship; I was not surprised to find pictures of the event BUT to see myself on the background hahaha it is like "candid camera", if you are not concentrated... if you are falling asleep... if you are looking somewhere else... if you are not properly dressed up... you can be a victim of a picture that you will always regret :) fortunately enough, this one is good hehe I have passed the test of the candida camera!

Mirando fotos en la pagina web de la LEN, encontre una galeria con fotos del Synchro Rome del ano pasado, que tambien fue el Campeonato Europeo de Nado Sincronizado; no me sorprendio ver fotos del evento PERO lo que si me sorprendio fue verme a mi mismo en un a de las fotos en el fondo jajaja es asi como "la camara escondida", si no estas concentrado... si te estas quedando dormido... si estas mirando para otro lado... si no estas vestido apropiadamente... tu puedes ser victima de una foto de la que te vas a arrepentir y desearas que no te la hayan tomado :) afortunadamente, esta foto es buena jeje he pasado la prueba de la camara esocndida!

By April 14th there will be the premiere of Water Lilies, a movie that shows the lifes of teenager synchronized swimmers; I have not seen much promotion about this movie and what I have watched probably doesn't show much about the whole movie and how this sports fits on the life of those girls. Truly speaking, we can pick up any swimmer and make a movie after them because outside the water, each one lives a different life and no need to say that being a teenager is not easy :) who knows, maybe real life is more alike to a movie than we do believe it is.

El 14 de Abril se estrenara la pelicula Lirios de Agua (Water Lilies), una pelicula que muestra la vida de adolescentes que practican nado sincronizado; no he visto mucha promocion acerca de esta pelicula y lo que he visto en cortos no muestra del todo como encaja el deporte en la vida de estas chicas. Honestalmente, pienso que podemos tomar como ejemplo la vida de cualquier atleta y hacer una pelicula basada en ella porque fuera del agua, cada quien tiene una vida diferente y no es necesario decirlo... pero ser adolescente no es nada facil :) quien sabe, tal vez la vida real se parece mas a una pelicula de lo que nosotros mismos creemos.

Gemma Mengual, a name of synchronized swimmer that became the face of this sport in her country (Spain) received special awards in Eindhoven recognizing her outstanding achievements on her sportive career and considering that she swims solo, duet, team and combination, all technicals and free routines, makes her the most complete synchronized swimmer in the world now on days. During the European Championships in Eindhoven, she won 4 gold medals (solo, duet, team and free combination), needless to say, she will be one of the names to follow during this year's Olympic Games in Beijing. That is just awesome and for sure we will be seeing more from what she is able to do :) Congratulations Gemma!

Gemma Mengual, el nombre de una nadadora sincronizada que se convirtio en la imagen de este deporte en su pais (Espana), recibio premios especiales en Eindhoven en reconocimiento a los logros obtenidos durante su carrera deportiva... y considerando que ella hace solo, dueto, equipo y combo, todas las rutinas tecnicas y libres, esto la hace la nadadora sincronizada mas completa en el mundo hoy en dia. Durante el Campeonato Europeo de Natacion en Eindhoven, ella gano 4 medallas de oro (solo, dueto, equipo y combo); sin necesidad de decirlo, ella sera uno de los nombres a seguir durante los proximos Juegos Olimpicos en Beijing. Eindhoven 2008 (updated)

The European Swimming Championship in Eindhoven has already began and there is where all the swimmers get to face eachother before the Olympic Games. That sounds very interesting and I wanted to be there but well, I couldn't... nevertheless, there is a web-site where you can see all the events in feeds on the INTERNET (that makes you feel you are there) and you can follow all the events live! After the events I have watched, I must admit that most of what is shown are underwater movements (but I am a Judge, so I want to see mainly what is going on outside the water), well, maybe it will get improved for next events and after all, at least I get to see some (so, no complains). Having Russia missing from the entries, there is an open way for other Teams trying to get closer to the podium; only Natalia Ischenko is swimming on behalf of the Russian Federation and yesterday placed 1st in overall after the solo preliminars... but Gemma Mengual won the Free Routine, what will happen on the finals? there is no other way than waiting (and at least watching it online).

El Campeonato Europeo de Natacion en Eindhoven ya ha comenzado y este sera el lugar donde todos los nadadores de Europa se enfrenten, unos con otros, antes de hacerlo en los Juegos Olimpicos en Beijing. Esto suena muy interesante, tanto que hasta queria viajar a Holanda y ver las competencias en vivo pero no lo pude hacer... de todos modos, hay una pagina pagina web donde se pueden ver todos los eventos a traves de INTERNET (y puedes sentir que estas ahi mismo) asi que se puede seguir toda la competencia en el mismo momento en que esta ocurriendo! Despues de haber visto un par de eventos, tengo que admitir que la mayoria de los videos muestran mas lo que pasa debajo del agua que sobre el agua (pero yo soy Juez, yo quiero ver lo que pasa afuera del agua), bueno, tal vez mejoren la edicion de las tomas pero aun asi, de todos modos puedo verlo en vivo (asi que no tengo quejas). Con Rusia faltando en las listas de inscripcion, hay un puesto vacante para todos los demas equipos para estar mas cerca del podio; solo Natalia Ischenko esta nadando en nombre de la Federacion Rusa y ayer quedo en 1er lugar en las preliminares de los Solos... pero Gemma Mengual gano la Rutina Libre, que va a pasar en las finales? no hay otra opcion que esperar (y al menos verlo online).

Poznan Cup 2008

Last week it was held Poznań Cup 2008 at the POSiR complex in Poznań (Poland). As I happen to live in Poland, I couldn't miss this event since I have joined several synchro events in Poland since I am here, nevertheless, lately I have always been out of the country when they took place. It was a good chance to see a new generation of swimmers from Russia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Poland, of course; Juniors and Seniors jumped on the water to do their best and I believe that, for those that are getting ready for later events, it was a great opportunity to measure what they have achieved so far.
La semana pasada se celebro el Poznań Cup 2008 en el centro deportivo POSiR de Poznań (Polonia). Como yo vivo en Polonia, no pude evitar asistir a este evento ya que yo he asistido a varios eventos de Nado Sincronizado en Polonia desde que vivo aqui, de todos modos, no habia podido asistir a los ultimos eventos porque siempre son en periodos en que yo estoy fuera del pais. Fue una buena oportunidad de ver una nueva generacion de atletas de Rusia, Bulgaria, la Republica Checa y Polonia, por supuesto; Juniors y Seniors saltaron al agua para hacerlo lo mejor que pudieron y estoy seguro que, para aquellas que se estan preparando para futuros eventos, esta fue una gran oportunidad de medir lo que han alcanzado hasta ahora.

With only 83 days before the Qualifying Event "Good Luck Beijing 2008" will take place, defining the names of the countries that will occupy the remaining 19 duets and 3 Teams that will complete the Synchronized Swimming Events during the Olympic Games Beijing 2008! The estructure is amazing and will be a great landmark along with the Olympic Stadium (the Nest). Faltando solo 83 dias para que comience el Evento Clasificatorio "Good Luck Beijing 2008", definiendo los nombres de los paises que ocuparan los lugares restantes, 19 duetos y 3 equipos, para completar asi los participantes de los eventos de Nado Sincronizado de los Juegos Olimpicos Beijing 2008! La estructura es increible y este edificio sera uno centro de interes y una especie de monumento junto al Estadio Olimpico (el Nido). Estoy seguro que todos tenemos muchas expectativas con respecto a lo que sucedera en estas piscinas, es solo cuestion de tiempo para averiguarlo :)

Llanos 2007

This year I have received the invitation from the Venezuelan Federation of Aquatic Sports to join other foreigner judges and the whole crew of Judges in Venezuela to judge during the National Games Llanos 2007 held in Guanare, the most important event at National Level that happens every two years where the whole country participates with representation of each State. This event has a qualifying event that took place 4 month before and its final was held with representation of 11 States having 9 Teams and Combos with 10 participants. There were also invited Oscar Salazar (COL), Orestes Temperini (ARG) and Elena Miret (CHI). It was fun and a great experience at the same time and I believe next we will begin again with all the Synchro reports here and there :) Este ano recibi la invitacion de la Federacion Venezolana de Deportes Acuaticos para unirme a otros Jueces extranjeros y junto con el grupo de Jueces de Venezuela, calificar los Juegos Nacionales Llanos 2007 que tuvieron lugar en Guanare; este evento es el mas importante a nivel nacional y ocurre cada 2 anos, donde todo el pais participa en representacion de cada Estado. Este evento tiene un evento clasificatorio que tomo lugar hace 4 meses y en la final participaron 11 Estados y hasta con 9 Equipos y Combos completos. Estuvieron tambien invitados Oscar Salazar (COL), Orestes Temperini (ARG) and Elena Miret (CHI). Fue divertido y una gran experiencia al mismo tiempo y estoy seguro que volveremos el proximo ano con los reportes sobre el Nado Sincronizado, aqui y alla :)
